about
The new single by America's premier second-line sea shanty outfit, in which we follow the misadventures of sailor jack in repose and aboard ship.
lyrics
'Twas a cold an' dreary mornin' in December
and all of me money being spent
Where it went to Lord I can't remember
So I down to the shippin' office went
Paddy, lay back!
Take in yer slack!
Take a turn around the capstan heave a pawl!
'Bout ship, stations, boys, be handy!
For we're bound for Valaparaiser 'round the Horn!
In those days there wuz a great demand for sailors
For the Colonies and for 'Frisco and for France
So I shipped aboard a Limey barque the Hotspur
An' got paralytic drunk on my advance
Paddy, lay back! Take in yer slack!
Take a turn around the capstan heave a pawl!
'Bout ship, stations, boys, be handy!
For we're bound for Valaparaiser 'round the Horn!
I axed the mate a-which a-watch wuz mine-O
Sez he, 'I'II soon pick out a-which is which
An' he blowed me down an' kicked me hard a-stern-O
Callin' me a lousy, dirty son-o'-a-bitch
Paddy, lay back!
Take in yer slack!
Take a turn around the capstan heave a pawl!
'Bout ship, stations, boys, be handy!
For we're bound for Valaparaiser 'round the Horn!

I first remembering hearing you sing a solo song accompanying yourself a few years ago on your guitar , I think at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, in a set with Paul Sanchez
I, right then, became a fan. You seemed to bring out the soul of each note and strum, of your guitar. Your voice also seemed to come from a deep connection to every heartbreak and dream of all your fellow human sojourners. Thank you. Glad I now have this road songs album to listen to!
